( born July 6, 1885 in Essen-Steele , Rhine Province ; † July 17, 1945 in Aldershot ) was a German officer , last Field Marshal in World War II . He was one of Hitler’s staunchest supporters in the German general staff and was partly responsible for the collapse of Army Group Center during the Soviet summer offensive , Operation Bagration
